Listed below are some significant dates in the racing calendar remaining for
2001:
September
W/e 1st-2nd
September - Cairngorm Cycling Festival
Arguably one of the most exciting and varied weekends of racing in the north's
calendar, with a great atmosphere and excellent hospitality by the host club.
The location of Aviemore / Kincraig is such that some of the top central belt
competitors are attracted up with consequent large start lists. There are four
races:
Event 1. - Sat 1030 Cairngorm Hillclimb ? no! not all the way to the Munro's summit but
2 miles up the road to the ski lift car park, which should take between 26 and
46 minutes. Charlie Ross came an excellent 4th to 3 of Scotlands top
riders last year.
Event 2. - Sat 1400 George Edwards Memorial 14 mile TT ? hillier that the average TT,
south of Aviemore and including the very scenic back road from Kincraig to
Rothiemurcus.
Event 3. - Sun 1000 10 mile TT ? Kincraig to Kingussie and back.
Event 4. - Sun 1400 Kincraig APR ? if you enjoyed the Halkirk Games road race you'll
enjoy this - two circuits of the '14' course of the previous day. There are few
opportunities for less competitive or would-be racers to ride in a bunch in the
north with the motivating benefit of handicapping and this is one of them. The
editors favourite race last year! A health warning though ? the narrow, winding
roads on parts of these courses must be taken with care ? it is essential to
keep to the left hand side of the road when cornering and to look out for
oncoming traffic. Also, the 3 races other than the '10' are limited to 40
riders, so get in early if you wish to enter. Entries to Peter Bennet, 01479
811293.
4th September - Last Tuesday 10 Mile Time Trial of Year
Remember that both September '10's' start at 1900, and that lights are
advisable at this time of the year due to the earlier onset of darkness.
11th September - 2 mile Hill Climb on Scrabster Hill
19:00 from the entrance to Thurso Business Park (BT)
30th September
Strath Brora run to be organised by Al. This is one of the most scenic rides in
the area, from Brora to Lairg via the Strath, lunch at the Shin Falls Centre,
thence via Bonar Bridge and Dornoch (avoiding main roads) back to Brora.
Not to be missed, details later.
