CYCLING WITH BEARS

Ian Curphey, (ex CCC member) Trust Risk Manager, Aberdeen, has recently returned from a 1,300 mile solo cycle/camping trip around Alaska.

Ian’s journey, which started in Anchorage, took him past Mount McKinley, North America’s highest mountain at over 20,000 feet, to Fairbanks, Alaska’s most northerly large town. From the wilds of the north, Ian’s southerly route followed the last 400 miles of the 800 mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline, to Valdez, the oil terminal town which gave its name the infamous "Exxon Valdez" which created the biggest oil pollution incident in history.

A boat journey through spectacular fjords, ringed by mountains, glaciers and icebergs, ended on the Western shores of the Kodai Peninsula which contains much of Alaska’s most spectacular scenery. Ian spent his last 10 days in Alaska exploring this fascinating and beautiful area which is rich in Gold Rush history before returning to Anchorage for his flight home.
