End to End Sponsored Cycle Run

It was only decided in mid-April that Angus Crockett and Steve Fraser were going to attempt the Lands End to John O’Groats cycle run. Different routes were looked at and the final route was found including accommodation. This was going to be an unassisted attempt as we were to carry all our own spares and clothing.

Planned Route

28th July – London Paddington – Penzance by train

then cycle to Lands End 15 miles

and then from Lands End to Sennen 2 miles

29th July – Sennen to Launceston 79 miles

30th July – Launceston to Brean 100 miles

31st July – Brean to Malvern Hills 87 miles (108 miles)

1st August – Malvern Hills to Stoke-on-Trent 77 miles

2nd August – Stoke to Pilling 80 miles

3rd August – DAY OFF (in Blackpool)

4th August – Pilling to Carlisle 77 miles

5th August – Carlisle to Moffat 47 miles

6th August – Moffat to Edinburgh 53 miles

7th August – Edinburgh to Blair Atholl 84 miles

8th August – Blair Atholl to Inverness 88 miles

9th August – Inverness to Helmsdale via Struie Hill 73 miles

10th August – Helmsdale to John O’Groats via Strath-halladale 78 miles

940 miles (961)

[End to End Mileage 925 (946)]

The first few days were hot but passed without any major problems except a puncture for Angus. BUT on the 31st July we had two hiccups, getting lost coming out of Gloucester and out of Tewkesbury. This added an extra 21 miles onto a long day, which finally ended at about 1.30 am. (We were not very popular with the night porter in the Malvern Hills Youth Hostel).

The day off in Pilling (Lancashire) was needed firstly to give our rear ends a rest and secondly to get our cycling clothes a good wash.

The second stage of the journey was quite pleasant until we got over the Border where we started to get gusty wind and then after Blair Atholl some heavy rain showers, unfortunately during one such shower I had a puncture. Worst of all was the MIDGES going up Strath-halladale. John O’Groats, although a welcome end to our trip, we knew we were back to reality as it was blustery and slightly cold. After a couple of glasses of Champagne, supplied by Julie (my wife) and Angi (Angus’ girlfriend) and then a welcome pint in the Groats hotel it was home to clean the bike and for Angus back to work on Monday, and I was back to the College.

As both Angus and I have shown the End to End can be done with no back up and also with little time to organise. Hopefully we can inspire others to complete this achievement and YES we would do it again.
